Bill Spotz

Bill Spotz has over thirty years of experience in scientific computing, including eight years as a program manager at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.  He received his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin in 1995, with a focus on computational fluid dynamics.  He spent two years as a postdoc and three years as a project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, where he studied ways to improve global atmosphere models for climate modeling systems.  He then became a member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque where he worked on a wide variety of modeling and simulation projects.  His most important achievement there was building Sandia's climate modeling program.  As a program manager at DOE's Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program office, Dr. Spotz co-led the applied mathematics program, which focuses on the mathematical foundations of high performance computing, scientific machine learning, and data analysis.  In this capacity, he managed over $264M in scientific computing research.

Spotz Scientific

Spotz Scientific, LLC, provides consulting services to institutions and researchers that wish to improve their submissions of scientific research proposals to funding agencies, especially scientific computing proposals to agencies such as the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science, office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR); or the National Science Foundation (NSF), Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) directorate.  Dr. Spotz can serve as a red team reviewer for draft proposals or pre-proposals, help an institution's management team down-select pre-proposals to meet institutional restrictions on submissions, or advise individuals or groups on strategic approaches to specific Notices of Funding Opportunities.  This could be especially helpful for potential applicants to the DOE Early Career Research Program or the NSF CAREER program.   He can also serve as a team member, providing scientific computing expertise on a project.
